United Methodist Women Meeting January 7

You are invited to an organizational meeting for WUMC’s United Methodist Women (UMW) group on January 7 at 11:30AM in Adult Ed.

Over the course of the last few months, several Wallingford United Methodist Church women have met to discuss the possibility of becoming members of the United Methodist Women, a national organization. Current WUMC members are Linda Condit, Marie Coon, Lisa Cooper, Mary Fry, Laura Haack, Julia Kruger, Mary Latham, Judy Mahoney, Nikki Nichols, Yvonne Onouye, Heather Orsen, Robbie Sherman, and Nancy Speer.

The group has moved forward in at least two different ways:

  • Participants met with church members who have had experience with this organization in the past and who shared the benefits of belonging. They even recently uncovered notebooks that reflect WUMC’s history with UMW. The fledgling group also met with WUMC Women’s Group leader, Karen Hansen, and had a different meeting with a current officer of UMW (a member of Pastor Head-Corliss’ congregation) who provided us with a wealth of literature to assist us in becoming members.
  • The WUMC group also began a Days for Girls project, which is connected with a Seattle District community program. A dozen WUMCers learned how to sew bags from a generous community contact who donated her time to teach the group. These bags contain sanitary products and are ultimately delivered to other countries that request this resource for their communities that may not have access to these resources. Many hours and monetary donations have been contributed by our church’s United Methodist Women, and the group is considering   operating this project under the umbrella of UMW, Wallingford style.
With the encouragement of Pastor Ann, the WUMC group is pursuing its ultimate goal of becoming official members of United Methodist Women. To that end, the organizational meeting on January 7 is a time to choose officers, discuss other activities to take on, and orient participants about UMW. All interested parties are invited to attend. Coffee and tea will be provided, and lunch contributions are requested. If you have questions, please contact Marie Coon at mcoon337@msn.com.
