Lenten House Churches Starting Soon

WUMC has a long tradition of meeting in small groups during Lent to study and reflect together in Lenten house churches. This year, the theme of our house churches is “Prayer and Activism: Faith in a Time of Fear.”
Lenten house churches are a great opportunity to get to know each other better, and to share thoughts and strategies for dealing with the uncertain times in which we live.
Signups to lead or participate in a group are available at the church on Sundays through March 5th. All are invited to participate.
Mary Edwards and Mary Latham are still seeking hosts* for house churches! To sign up to host, please send your name, contact info, date/time of your house church meetings, etc. to Mary (maryedwards1964@msn.com).
** Lenten house church leaders: Join Mary and other hosts for an optional introduction to this year’s materials on “Activism and Prayer: Faith in a Time of Fear” after church on February 19th in Taylor Hall.

Workshops: Practicing Presence & Prayer

“Grandma, guess what I learned in school today?  I learned about the present, and that it’s a gift to the future.  That’s why they call it the present.”  – Lily

In these challenging times, there is an even greater need to ground ourselves in Spirit. We are called to deepen the roots in our faith and prayer life so that our decisions and actions can emerge from loving wisdom and clarity, rather than fear, frantic activity, or reactivity. But where is this ground, and how do we find it?

We will be exploring how it is possible to discover a presence, a sense of awake intelligence, in silence. For four Sundays before Lent, you’re invited to come and learn some tools for contemplative practice/prayer. The emphasis will be on presenting simple, direct pointers for contemplation, and then practicing them.

This is an opportunity to find out for yourself, through your own experience, what might be uncovered in silence, presence and alertness, and how this might help you to not only find more peace in your day-to-day experiences, but also to make decisions from whole-heartedness that is grounded in authenticity and genuine strength.

These four one-hour sessions will meet January 29th and February 5th, 12th, and 19th from 5:30-6:30PM. Sessions are open to all adults. Feel free to invite friends or others who are interested. Children fifteen and older (who can be comfortable sitting in silence) are also welcome. Laura Thorne will introduce the methods. The resources are openhearted awareness practices from Loch Kelly’s book and audio instructions, Shift Into Freedom.

Contact Laura at Diego8@earthlink.net, if you have further questions. Everyone – whether or not you are affiliated with WUMC – is welcome.

Job Opportunity: Interim CYF Leaders

The Staff-Parish Relations Committee has decided to hire an interim or several interims to keep our program for children and youth going.
As the CYF Director position remains unfilled, the Staff-Parish Relations Committee is offering a monthly stipend for each of the four parts of our current CYF program. A person could apply for one or all four of the interim positions. We are hoping to get people from the congregation to fill these positions so that the relationships built can continue after the new person is hired. However, we would also consider people outside the church. The positions would be for up to 3 months starting at the beginning of January. Below are the details.
  • Sunday School Coordinator, $200 per month: We have a strong curriculum and several people who work regularly with the children. The coordinator would choose which of the options to use each Sunday and gather any supplies needed. They would also be sure volunteers are scheduled for the two classes.
  • Young Listeners Program, $125 per month: This is the option for children to leave the service after the children’s sermon. This person would recruit one other adult for each Sunday and go out with the children. The program is flexible but a possible plan is to talk some about the scripture, then interview the other adult about their life and their spiritual path, and close with joys and concerns. The children would usually draw or doodle while all of this was going on.
  • Supper Church Coordinator, $75 per monthSupper Church is held once each month on a Monday night. The coordinator would plan an activity and recruit people to help with the activity and others to bring dinner. The coordinator would also work with Pastor Ann to plan the short service and be sure there is publicity about the event.

If you are interested in one or more of these positions, please contact Ann Joyce, Staff-Parish Relations Chair, at m_ann_joyce@msn.com or 206.276.8090.

Thank you!
