Advent, Christmas, & Ephipany at WUMC

The first Sunday of Advent – the season before Christmas where we anticipate the birth of Christ – is coming up on December 3. This leads us into the 12 days of Christmas and the celebration of Ephipany in January.

Below is a list of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany events coming up in the next weeks at WUMC. You are welcome to attend any and all services, whatever your faith, no-faith, or church affiliation.

Spiral Service (December 1, 7:00PM)

The Spiral Service is a beautiful way to reflect during Advent. Come walk the spiral (a labyrinth of greens and candles laid out on the sanctuary floor) and join in for this service of music, prayer, and contemplation.

Hanging of the Greens (December 2, 9:00AM—12:00PM)

Help decorate the sanctuary for the season during this fun morning of creativity and fellowship. Drop in anytime during the morning or stay for the whole time.

Carol Sing and Play Along (December 2, 12:30PM)

Musicians of all abilities, instruments, and ages can come make music together at the Carol Sing and Play Along. Bring your voice or instrument, a music stand, some festive Christmas garb, and an appetite for cider and cookies to this wonderful afternoon.

First Sunday of Advent (December 3, 10:00AM)

Advent is the four-week period preceding Christmas in which we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Love’s Incarnation in Christ. On this first Sunday of our Advent journey, we’ll ask: “What Are We Longing For?” Communion will be served.

Sanctuary Open for Meditation & Prayer (December 8, 7:00-9:00PM)

Give yourself space for reflection and prayer amidst the busy holiday season. The sanctuary will be open for unguided meditation and prayer on December 8 and 15. All are welcome to come find solace here at WUMC.

Second Sunday of Advent (December 10, 10:00AM)

Our Advent journey continues with the question, “Now What?” Now that there are whispers of good news afoot, what exactly do we do? Come engage this question and also enjoy our participatory retelling of the Christmas story with our kids.

Sanctuary Open for Mediation & Prayer (December 15, 7:00-9:00PM)

Once again, the sanctuary will be open for silent prayer and meditation from 7:00-9:00PM. This is a peaceful time to center and connect to self and Spirit in a holy space.

Third Sunday of Advent (December 17, 10:00AM)

This third Sunday of our Advent journey will feature special seasonal music from our very own WUMC choir. The topic of the day is “You Mean Me?”—could it be that we, like Mary, have in fact been chosen to bear good news?

Longest Night Service (December 22, 7:00PM)

The Christmas season can be joyful, but it can also bring complicated feelings of loss, loneliness, and sorrow. The Longest Night service is a time to claim difficult feelings and also feel surrounded by the compassionate love of God and community.

Fourth Sunday of Advent (December 24, 10:00AM)

As the miracle of Christmas draws closer, we are invited to ask, “What If?” What if God is about to do a new thing? What if women and men are being invited, even still, into the unfolding of that mysterious and lovely story?

Christmas Eve Service (December 24, 7:30PM)

On this Christmas Eve, come join the WUMC family for an evening of carols and candles, stories and Scriptures. This family-friendly service will take us right into the nativity story and send us to wait for Christmas morning full of hope, joy, and wonder.

Christmas Day Service (December 25, 10:00AM)

Bring family and friends to celebrate the glory of Christmas morning. The Christmas Day service is a festive event hailing the gift and mystery of the Incarnation. There will be lots of singing, storytelling, and fellowship, and all are invited to celebrate with us.

First Sunday of Christmas (December 31, 10:00AM)

On this First Sunday of Christmas, we will hold a Covenant Service, complete with Communion and Love Feast. This service invites us to reflect on what has passed and commit ourselves to what lies ahead in the new year.

Celebration of Epiphany (January 7, 10:00AM)

Epiphany is the 12th Day of Christmas, and ushers in the church season of Epiphany (which lasts till Ash Wednesday). Turn your heart toward the new season at this Sunday worship service. Please note that no Communion will be served.

  •  Our Christmas Offering for The Community Emergency Relief Fund

This fund serves both church friends and our neighbors in deep need throughout the year. Money spent in 2017 has gone to cover medical costs, food, utilities, bus tickets, and limited housing assistance. Our Christmas Offering is the primary source of monies for this important fund, a gift of hope to those who are struggling.

  • The Giving Tree

Our Giving Tree this year carries tags (of gift requests) for the families under the care of the Mary’s Place Shelter. We are delighted to be participating in this special mission with the staff and families of our Wallingford Child Care Center.
